So I set up a white box yesterday ( still need better lighting ) but anyways I'm shooting with the aperture of 7.1 , some points don't seem to be in focus and I'm wondering why . Take this picture for example, the spider on the handle looks to be in focus, but at the opposite end, it doesn't ( or does it to you ) . What gives ? I'm some what of a noob, do I need to increase the aperture, do I need to zoom out and move myself in closer ? Tip, advice ? Trying to learn.

maybe I'm just crazy...After resizing it it makes the difference harder to see in the pic.

At f/7.1, it should be in focus, but your underexposured and it's hard for me to be sure. Try to adjust your WB and boost your exposure in PP.

Any suggestions on how to adjust the WB. I've been taking shots of my grey card, and setting them in my camera, but I also never really shot in the light box, nor have I manual adjusted my WB ( besides setting it by taking a pic of the grey card )

How did you set it up - lights? Tripod? Manual or autofocus?

It was hand held, auto focus was on, only had a house hold light ( I need to upgrade the lighting source soon ) I just figured if that was in focus, the other thing would be as well but maybe I'm wrong.

1/5 at 50mm handheld isn't a recipe for sharpness, IS or not. You need a flash or a tripod.

You could always use the 2-second (or 10-second) timer to overcome the lack of remote. Set up the shot, camera on tripod, set the self-timer, push the button and wait for it to take the picture.

Or you could jack up the shutter speed to an appropriate number to where camera shake isn't a problem...maybe 1/500 or so.

If you need depth-of-field, stop down the lens. Try it with f/8, f/11....

Wasn't aware of the 2-second delay on the 40d, I'm use to the 350 only have the 10 second one, which sucked waiting that long.

Waiting that long can be a bit inconvenient - but I'd rather wait than have a shaky/blurry image. ;)

When looking at the top LCD:
self timer (10 seconds) - shows a stop watch
self timer (2 seconds) - shows a stop watch with a '2' next to it.
