never used a flash but considering one

for my 300d. its either the canon 420 or the sigma 500 super....is there any real benefit to one over the other taking into account that i am a beginner with flash/indoor photography

Well, the Sigma will give you (i believe) a little more power, and you will be able to use flash exposure compensation.

I own the 420, and am perfectly happen. The hack for the 300d will give you flash exposure compensation anyways.
