Hello,

Im planing a trip to the bronx zoo this spirng / summer. I need to know if i have enough "reach" I will be using a Nikon d90 (dx 1.5x crop) and a Nikon 80-200mm 2.8.

Do i need a TC and if so 1.4x or 2x?

Thanks,

Joe Jeram

Depends on how you want to shoot. If you want to catch more environment the 200mm will be fine. If you want to get 'up close and personal' you may want to grab a 1.4x. I have never been a fan of the 2x converters as they seem to suck AF speed and IQ. However, Nikon might have different results.

For most of my zoo trips (I haven't been to the Bronx zoo), I end up using my 300mm more than anything else, so a TC would certainly be a good idea. If the Nikon TCs are anythink like the Canons (and I'm guessing they're pretty similar), I agree that you're better off sacrificing a little reach for the better image quality you're likely to get with the 1.4x.
