Congrats on the new camera. You can take pictures of anything you'd like :)

Here are some sample pics from that lens:

And a thread about the lens:

When you say cars, do you mean moving cars or still cars? Lots of light or evening outdoors?

With some practice and a little luck, hopefully some good ones!

As a beginning photographer, one lens (instead of lense, just FYI) that you might want to look into is the Canon 50mm f/1.8. It's a normal focal length lens which has a very wide aperture, allowing you to experiment with a shallower depth of field. It's a steal at only $100!

You might want to look into a tripod and/or off camera lighting, even though the latter is a bit advanced...

Yes, that 28-135 is a good starter lens. The only drawback is that it won't give you a terridbly wide angle of view, so you'll have to step back a little to squeeze the whole car into the picture. For night/low light shots you might want to look into a tripod, but more importantly you should get a good introductory book on the basics of photography. Many like the "magic lantern" series, but I personally liked "the digital field guide" (not sure if it is still in print).

In either case, you will have a little bit of a learning curve and then you should be in pretty good shape to see what type of lens you might really want to get as your second.

don't join classes, just go on this forum everyday.
It is free and full of knowledge.

You picked up a great camera to begin with. Once you get a hang of exposure and processing, you will never turn back.

IMO, on a crop it is the perfect length for portraits. 28 is wide enough for a full-length without distorting, 50 is half-length, 85 is ideal for headshots, and 135 is long enough for anything else!

I have that lens and I love it! I like it better than my 55-250mm because it's much wider so I feel more versatile. The USM is also nice, focuses fast and accurately. I find the color just a little bit green on my 1D but I just adjust it in DPP. It's also quite sharp on my XTI.

congrats and have fun!
