PLeeeeeeaaaasssse help !!!! I am tearing my hair out. I have done a job for a client which has resulted in 100's of images being saved to separate folders. I am now at the stage of burning these folders to DVD and I am stuck. Firstly when using Bridge, the images keep changing their order within the folders and secondly even if I get them in the correct order, when I then transfer them to a DVD they go out of order again. I have used Nero and Windows Explorer and the same thing happens. I am using DVD - RW so I thought I could just move them about on the DVD - but no it won't let me do that either. Help I am so frustrated and tired - I have been trying all day to get over this problem I just want the files to stay in the correct order

How are they numbered? Rename them 001, 002 and so on.

You're burning a data DVD disc?

I use Deep Burner (Free) with no problems: http://www.deepburner.com/?r=products (external link)

My pictures: John Wilke Photography (external link), Flikr (external link) , Facebook (external link), Fine Arts America (external link), Canon 1D MkII N, 1D MkIII, various Canon and Tokina lenses. :D

I can't rename them as the client has specified the name that must be given. Does Deep Burner allow you to dictate the order of the images ?

One thing that causes havoc with the ordering of files is your file naming. For example, if you have files named name1, name2, name3,...name10, name11,...name20, name21... (extensions dont matter) the system orders them alphabetically, not numerically, so they will be ordered name1, name10, name12,...name19, name2, name20, etc -- in otherwords not "numerically" in the way we understand.

To get around that, name your files with leading zeros, according to your largest number, so name001 would work for up to 999 files (otherwise 1000 would fall in with the ones).

Another problem is with copies, as in name001.jpeg, name001-2.jpg, etc. -- these things get screwed up in ordering. I'm pretty sure it's because the "dash" comes before the "period" alphabetically.

The first problem is easy to fix, either in your importing or your renaming scheme. The second one is not so easy because it tends to be set by the software with no options that I have seen. So, I'm quite often uploading a set of shots into my Web gallery and then having to renumber the versions to fit.

We would need way more information to help you much. Remember that ordering is done by the operating system reading the disk, and is most likely based on an alphabetical sort by file name. If you need images to go into one folder use windows explorer search, copy and paste to one folder, then rename.

Similar issue cropped up today -

There is no "order" of files in a directory (at least in any OS I've worked with )

Files have attributes, and you can "sort" the LISTING of files based on many of these attributes. Windows is smart in that if sees the directory is full of pictures, it adds fields to Explorer so you can sort by Capture time. This is NOT the same as file modified/created.
