AV video cable compatibility canon/nikon?!

I have a cable that runs from the camera that converts to RCA jacks. one came with my canon, and one with the nikon

very odd thing is - they dont seem to be compatible. the ends look exactly the same. the stepping of the pins and everything

the only differences are one has yellow bands and one has black. has anyone else ran into this issue?

I know I can just swap cables with the respective camera and it works. but it seems like these cables should be interchangeable?!

This is an 1/8" phone jack to a single RCA jack, you mean? Or an 1/8" stereo to a pair of RCA jacks? Or what exactly? I don't remember what cables came with any specific one of my cameras, and I know I've got cables with 1, 2, and 3 RCA connectors. The canonical colour scheme (you'll see it on VCRs as well, so "canonical" isn't the same as "Canonical") is yellow=video signal; red & white are right & left audio channels.
