I currently have a 10D and was saving for a 70-200 2.8 L IS, when it came to me that I should go for a new body. So a used 40D for maybe $6-$700.00 and get the 70_200 after the new model comes out or a 50D kit for $1,100.00. and wait longer for the 70-200. Any thoughts and comments are most appreciated.

I am pretty sure you can find a 40D for around $500 if you look hard =)

IMO, the incremental upgrades you'd get by going for a 50D instead of a 40D are not worth the price difference.

I disagree..

I had to make a choice when I bought another body.. I chose the 50D over the 40D on AF Micro adjustment alone.. I my opinion this feature alone is worth its weight in rocking horse manure..

The other day I was playing with a friend's 40D and the first thing I noticed was how good the LCD screen is on my 50D compared to the 40D..

Is there any reason you would go for the 50D kit? If you currently have a 10D, you must have lenses for it, that would work perfectly fine on the 50D.

Additionally, you might consider the 50D + 70-200 f/4L instead? Some sort of compromise?

short answer from me...I went from the 10d to the 50d,,,,,i waited for the 50d to come out rather than going for the 40d......the difference for me was the fps and the lcd....both great cameras

The 40D is a great camera but the 50D is a better one IMO. The Microfocus adjust can turn a good lens into a great one without going through the hassle of sending it back to be calibrated.

If cost is an issue, the 40D is fine, if you can afford the 50D, highly recommended as others have stated for the microadjust feature.

+1 for the 50D. on the used market they're only running ~$150 more than 40D's and the MA feature as well as those extra ISO boosts make all the difference in the world especially when you're in a bind and 12800 is going to get you the shot at the nessesary shutter speed.

BUY THE LENS NOW!!! The 70-200L IS MKI will be gone soon - this is your last chance to buy a brand new IS 2.8 tele for under $2000!!!

The 40D or 50D will be used for years to come, deals on out going glass like this happen ONCE. And the lens will likely be worth what you paid for it in 5-10yrs unlike the body.

I kaNt sPeL...

Brand new is overrated, Canon warranty is only 1 year anyways, lol.

Thanks for all the input, Fnothaft yes I have a lens or two mainly use a Tamrom 28-200 non IS. I shot my neighbors 28-105 non L with IS and it was fantastic thats the only reason on a kit lens. Does the 70-200 4L work well in low light with the 50D? Plays, basketball games, hockey?

Or buy a 30D with 90% of the features of a 40D and have enough to get the new lens NOW!
