With the announcement of the latest 5D Mark II firmware update, I have to admit that I am impressed with the way Canon continues to bring improvements to this camera.

But I also got to thinking about the things I wish this camera had -- like a real high range auto ISO function, or maybe the ability to re-program the exposure lock button to do something crazy, like mirror lockup. Is that something that could do through firmware?

Maybe, maybe not, but I sometimes get the feeling that manufacturers hold back updatable features to make new cameras appealing. But what if they adopted the apple model, and sold "feature upgrades" like apple sells apps.

Would you pay for them, especially if it meant that you could upgrade a perfectly good camera body?

I wouldn’t buy firmware from Canon but if someone had aftermarket firmware that made the camera better than Canons I would.

Why would it make a difference on which vendor?

I agree -- bugs are on them.

Can you imagine a DSLR with the capability of a xD series camera with the flexibility of the iphone programming platform?

Sorry. My idea presumes that they weren't available until after you owned the camera.

I'd pay for firmware updates if it provides useful features.
