YEAAHHH Just rented a 24-105 F4L

to see how shooting with a L glass differ from my trusty 28-135 on my beautiful 40D... Will be practicing with it for a few days before going on vacation to NYC...

I been shooting with my current rig for 2+ years and know my camera well, since economy is not great and investing in L Glass is still out of my budget I decided to Rent this nice lens for a couple of Wks along with a 580 Speedlite...

Of course will get some days of practice before the trip, and also will pack my old 28-135 with me... Just in case...

It performs very well with the 40D. This lens has spent a lot of time attached to my 30 & 40 D. Definitely an everyday walk around lens though even more so when matched with full frame. You may wish that you had something a little wider to go with it. Colors are very nice with this lens.

Cool, but investing in L glass is never a bad idea since the hold their value!

Its a great lens I have it attached to my 40D and love the results. But when the 5D arrives tommorow, the 40D will be lonely. Guess I will have to buy the 24-70 for the 40D.

I think we sometimes overlook this lens. I have it as well as other L primes. I used it the other day for a shoot, and I must say it really stands up to other L lenses. The only downside is the f/4.

If you aren't looking to shoot at F2.8, this is a fantastic lens. I use it for much of my published work using multiple bodies (40D, 1Dmk3, 1DsMK3).

I hope F4 is not going to be too slow.... My fastest lens is my cheap nifty fifty, but I rarely use it at its widest, I usually stop it down a little.... For those indoor shoots I'm planning to use the 580EX, Although I have to admit I have never shot w external flash....

The other factor that made me decide on this one above the 24-70 F2.8 was the weight.... With a gripped 40D and flash my neck will be hurt quick....

I love my 24-105 for outdoor use, a very sharp lens. Indoors, it is slow without some speedlite help.

I tend to shy away from using it indoors and use fast primes instead.

It's a good lens. It's good to hear someone on here who's actually enthused about photography ("my beautiful 40D"). I know most people here are, but there's so much haranguing about this camera and that camera, and what's sharper and which lens, it's refreshing.

if you really want to achieve the very best pictures from your vacation which you have already invested time and money to snap pictures there,
you wont be overly concerned with a small amount of extra weight..

you might miss that perfect shot because of not having f2.8 at your dispossial...

where as having the extra zoom length can be fixed buy using your feet.

you are going to the land of B&H and Adorama and many others. will you pay your homage. B&H is a fantastic place. wish i was going to nyc, my son is there.

Out of curiosity, how much does it usually cost to rent a lens like this? I'm sure it varies by lens like just about anything out there but I'd love to do the whole try before you buy to make sure I know what I'm getting into when I finally decide to purchase another lens.

You'll be doing a lot of walking to increase the size of the sun in a sunset picture however.

It's a great lens.
