Went in January and humidity wasn't a problem. You should keep a rain cover in your bag all the time anyhow. I have a couple of OpTech RainSleeves that live in mine against an emergency.

I was there in July and August of 1995 with a bag full of Minolta film gear and I didn't have any problems with humidity or rain...

Why shouldn't your 40D stand up to the conditions??

I've been coming to SE Asia since 2004 and living in Laos since late 2007.. I have never had any problems due to climate or environment with my gear..

December? ... You mean 10 months from now?!

December is the beginning of the dry season. They only have two seasons. The rainy season is from June-Oct.

I've been there over a dozen times. You should only worry about theft. Its out of hand over there. Other than petty theft ... its a great country.

Did I say "Theft" enough? :(

I literally just got back from Costa Rica this last Saturday. It is very humid out there. Just be carefull when taking your camera from a cool/air conditioned place to outside, as that is when things will fog up. I carried my stuff in a messenger shoulder bag, and didn't open the flaps until everything was aclimated to the surrounding air temperature.

I never had any concerns about theft, although I did always keep my bag on/near me, and never left it by itself. Just be aware of it, and you'll be fine.

Costa Rica is awesome. I only had a lens fog up on me once when I went into the rain forest at Manuel Antonio, which is absolutely beautiful by the way. Impossible as it seem the humidity inside the rain forest seems like it is greater than 100%. I never had any problems with theft but I heard enough horror stories to be very attentive with my surroundings. A great place though. Have fun!

I was in Bali a couple of weeks ago and the sudden change from a cold AC room to the humid outside was enough for the lens to have some condensation on it... just gotta watch out when moving from inside to outside. Bring some zip locks.
