Hi everyone, I recently got the Canon Powershot SX20 IS and was thinking of getting into photography. I still haven't figured out the basics of photography and the camera settings. I have taken a few pictures with the timer of myself to test it out, but I NEED some tips please :D

Any tips about photography would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks :D

Bryan Petersons book, "Understanding Exposure" does a great job explaining the basics and their relationships. There are also lots of good links. Here are a few to get you going.

HI and welcome to POTN. You may want to read this "sticky" thread at the top of the page - it's geared toward SLRs, but most of it will apply to you and your camera also. I'd also highly recommend buying the book "Understanding Exposure" by Michael Freeman - it's a great read that will help you understand all the basics (and beyond). Read your manual with your camera in hand to help learn all the settings and functions, and ask if you come up with any specific questions about how to use it.

Above all, go out and take pictures! Experimenting and getting familiar with your camera is the best way to learn.

Firstly, read the manual - even if you don't understand most of it. Visit every sub-forum of POTN. Google what you don't understand. Take tons of pictures. Read the manual again.

I did much of that the first few hours I picked up my DSLR :). The web is filled with information if you just take a few seconds to look. If there is truly something you can't find an answer too, you've got a great community here to help you out!

This coming from a newbie just like you.
