Had to try out my newly purchased Canon 16-35mm
It was not wide enough for this spectacular show, so I ended up switching back to the 10-22mm but then it went back to quiet again.
I guess I was tired last night when loading these up. They are not as sharp as I wanted. I guess I didn't focus good enough. But there will be other evenings :)

Thank you. Last nights 5 minute show was reallly bright and so active. If I ever get a 5DmkII this would have been excellent for a video

Thank you. Yes here I should have used the 10-22. But there where absolutely no time. We stopped the car, jumped out and just started to shoot. 5 exposure later this became weak and I switched lens and moved location. But then it was weak again. So you really have to be there :)
I also added 2 more images

Beautiful.
I haven't seen the Aurora in years. I think the last time I saw them I was 19 or 20 years old when I was still living in Minnesota. It's a shame we don't get to see it here in North Carolina. Thankfully we have people such as yourself to share them with those of use who can't be there to see them when they are active.
Thank you!

If there is low activity it could last all night with just a thin strip of light that is barely visible and hardly moving for hours. Then you have the strong ones that moves like crazy for 15-30 minutes and goes back to slow movements but still good visibility. And like last night. Almost invisible and we decides to move. When we stopped the car is was really exploding. Right overhead you could see the corona. And the ground was lit up like 2-3 full moons and then it was gone. So that is the greatness of the aurora. You never know how strong it will be even with great forecast.

i was in alaska back in 1980, in the spring (working on the pipeline, 24 hours of daylight, in fairbanks) and woke up around 2 am and went outside and the entire sky was lime green, i was told that it was the northern lights in overdrive.
since i was bone tired i went back to bed. and no i didn't even think of taking a photo.
have you ever seen or heard of anything like this?

No never in the summer since it is too bright. But you never know. If you saw it that must be correct unless you where sleepwalking ;)
