VIDEO CAMERA not still camera. Mod, please edit the title.

Sorry if this is posted elsewhere.

On the Canon Hong Kong site:

Canon adopts MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec for upcoming professional digital camcorder

Not a rumour.

This is the prototype Camcorder that Canon has been showing off apparently.

It has two slots in the back (card A and card B). Looks about the right side for a CF card.

The use of camera in the title is misleading, since the PR says camcorder, as in these.

Sorry, I messed up the title. I should have wrote VIDEO camera.

I did mean video camera (camcorder). Sorry for confusion.

Gonna make "digitizing" video a lot easier...

There are a lot of happy FC and Avid editors out there right now not to mention feature producers.

Lets not kid ourselves; Nikon will likely have real competition (not motion JPEG) to what Canon can do now fairly soon. They don't have much of a choice. If Canon could use this CODEC in its professional camcorders and dSLR's - they could really put the hurt on anything that Nikon brings out.

I get giddy thinking about it; a classical camcorder for some shots, and a dSLR for others, all brought in on the same project timeline without kludgy work arounds/transcodings. It would be awesome.

I don't see Nikon making a "normal" pro video cam. Canon have been making them for years.

This could be a very interesting product. The Canon pro camcorders are way overdue for an update.

They seem to be moving away from tapes (which is good), I wonder what sort of storage system they'll be using. Hopefully something that will let you record a few hours in a row.

I'm also wonding what kind of media they'll use. You can't exactly just leave the camera in the edit bay for a while until the editor is done.

Probably some sort of flash disk I assume.

I'll just put those links in the first post for people. Thanks dude.

I wonder how big the sensor is...

My (old) XL2 is about a x7 crop. Hopefully this is getting closer to FF. ;)

Just a thought... Dual CF could mean you could get continuous shooting, when one card gets full it MIGHT switch to the next, giving you time to replace the "A" card. Awesome if that's true. I won't have to time switching tapes at events. :)

If this camera turns out OK and isn't too expensive, I'll be getting one I think.
