The Kinsol Trestle is located in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island (Canada). The last train crossed in the mid-1970s. Since then it has been sadly neglected.

A couple of years ago it was slated for demolition because it was considered a hazard. After much lobbying by interested folks, it appears the trestle will now be rehabilitated, to become a pedestrian crossing over the Koksilah River and a key link in the Trans Canada Trail. Construction will likely start in a few months.

I visited a couple of weeks ago for these shots.

That thing looks great! Too bad that you can't get a train on it.

An amazing piece of construction, I wonder how many super feet of timber it took. I specially like shot #5.

I think I recall reading about this as a project in Model Railroader many moons ago...

The "hook" was the curvature and how difficult that was to engineer (and replicate in miniature .. HO Scale IIRC)

Glad to see someone thinks it's worth saving.

It's reminiscent of the Goat Canyon trestle (external link) on the old San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway, the big difference being the SD&AE line is still operational. The Carrizo Gorge Railroad operates over the line and the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum utilizes a part of the right-of-way also, although not across the trestle.

The San Diego Model Railroad Club built an HO Scale replica of the Goat Canyon Trestle at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.
