I found out about sharpening .jpgs with custom filters from Chris Tarintino via a book I was reading by Katrin Eismann.
Chris explains, "The advantage of the Custom filter is that I can sharpen without adding artifacts or halos, and if need be, I can brighten and sharpen in one fell swoop."
In Photoshop, pull up a .jpg that hasn't been sharpened.
Then go to filter/other/custom and load the matrix like this to sharpen and add a bit of contrast to your photo.

To sharpen the photo without adding the contrast...load the matrix like this.

And to sharpen and brighten the photo, as Chris says In one fell swoop...load the matrix as such...

If you like the results...create a photoshop action.
Have fun...

You can make your own convolution kernels in ImageJ (free on the Mac) and the GIMP probably has this kind of thing too.
