I don't know what to do. Which on is better or are they pretty equal. I'm not worried about the focal length, just want the image quality to be awesome. Anybody who has both f these I would love to hear from you.

Thanks a million!!

I don't have both but have the 85L......From what I've seen around here, the 85 beats the 50 overall but not by much. The 50 is capable of producing wonderful photos and if you need the FL, it's tough to beat. If you don't need autofocus and don't mind giving up some aperture, you may consider the Zeiss 50 f2.0 Makro. I do have that lens and I'm very very happy with it.

They might be equal in an MTF sense, or one might be far ahead, but the differences in the FL-aperture ratio make all of the difference here. If you want "impressive" @f1.2, the 85L it is... the 50 (being a normal) takes more skill to pull off a shot as unique.

That said, the 1/3 stop slower Sigma 85/1.4 is around the corner, and depending on the price...

The 50L focuses a bit faster. They both produce pretty impressive shots.

like the previous poster said, the sigma 85 1.4 could be a real winner.

To be honest though, if I had the cash and wanted both....I'd probably end up with the 50L and the 85 1.4 Rokinon/Samyang. It's optically fantastic.

My preference is for the 50L when shot wide open. However, at apertures higher than 2.8, in my opinion, the 50L becomes average whereas the 85L continues to shine. Also, don't overlook the .45m closest focusing distance of the 50L versus .95m with the 85L. If you don't have the extra space to step back, you won't be able to get your shot with the 85.

jra is right about the Zeiss, it's great. So, if you don't need the electrical components of the the canon lens, skip it and go for the Zeiss.

My 85L is way sharper than the 50L @ f/1.2 even after sending the 50L to Canon. Not to say the 50L is bad @ 1.2, but my 85L is just stellar with no micro adjusting needed on either of my cameras.

Yoy can see the SLRgear.com blur plots in the following two links:
85L (external link)
50L (external link)

Also, here is the-digital-picture.com ISO12233 charts:

In both cases, the 85L seems to be ahead of the 50L by a stop, and always has less CA... in fact, it seems the 50L has CA even at f/8
Starting from about f/2.8 the 85L is on par with the 100mm macro, if not better in the center.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.
