I don't know what to do. Which on is better or are they pretty equal. I'm not worried about the focal length, just want the image quality to be awesome. Anybody who has both f these I would love to hear from you.
Thanks a million!!

The 50 is capable of producing wonderful photos and if you need the FL, it's tough to beat. If you don't need autofocus and don't mind giving up some aperture, you may consider the Zeiss 50 f2.0 Makro. I do have that lens and I'm very very happy with it.

They might be equal in an MTF sense, or one might be far ahead, but the differences in the FL-aperture ratio make all of the difference here. If you want "impressive" @f1.2, the 85L it is... -CW

t60p Senior Member 450 posts Likes: 17 Joined Jul 2006 More info | My preference is for the 50L when shot wide open. However, at apertures higher than 2.8, in my opinion, the 50L becomes average whereas the 85L continues to shine. Also, don't overlook the .45m closest focusing distance of the 50L versus .95m with the 85L. If you don't have the extra space to step back, you won't be able to get your shot with the 85.

Mar 08, 2010 12:25 | #6 My 85L is way sharper than the 50L @ f/1.2 even after sending the 50L to Canon. Not to say the 50L is bad @ 1.2, but my 85L is just stellar with no micro adjusting needed on either of my cameras.
