24-105 Price Disparity

Hi - I've been watching the forums like a hawk for a 24-105, and they seem to come in 2 very distinct flavors. The used, $750-$825 versions that are clean (and sell VERY quickly), and the $950+ versions from 5D kits.

What is the deal with the kits that people want another $100-$150 for this lens? Didn't they essentially get the lens for a discount price because they bought the kit? I would think the kit versions would be more on par with the used lenses cost-wise, rather than having a premium attached.

Thoughts? Am I crazy?

They may have been pulled out of kits but they are still "new" lenses.

Are you asking this because you're looking to buy one and looking for a steal? The going rate is about $900 if you found them for $750-$825 either they're abused or the person doens't know what he/she is selling it for. If you don't like it you can go ahead and pay $1050 for a new one your choice.

They're new lenses, just not sealed. So they're more in line with new prices, seeing as they're cosmetically perfect, and have a very recent date code, as well as most of the 1 year warranty left.

The 5DmkII kits should be white boxed, but still technically "unused" so it wouldn't fetch used prices. This would only be from retailers, I would never believe a random seller telling me that they "never used their kit lens."

Well, the fact is many people buy the 5DMkII kit, and try to sell the lens without even taking it out of the box in order to essentially flip it to get a "discount" on the actual camera. I see no harm in this.. everyone comes out a winner.

I strongly considered this when buying my 5D2, but decided it was not worth the hassle since I already had a 24-105.

Completely meaningless since Canon warranty is non-transferable.

I think "Looking for a steal" is a bit snotty and accusatory. I see plenty of these at reasonable prices. One sold at FM for $750 yesterday. Would I like to pay that? Yes. How that's stealing is beyond me. Is that somehow violating your worldview of 24-105 lenses or insulting your integrity?

I just want to understand why something you get for a discount demands a premium on the resale market.

Things will sell for what people are willing to pay. Many have no idea of the actual values.

Well i would probably buy the ones from kits. Im guessing the reason why theyre more is because they where bought for cheap with kit and are new lenses instead of someones lens that wants to sell after using for a while to get another lens they need.

If you have the receipt, Canon is happy and you get your warranty work.

I actually went the other way, I bought the 5D Mark II body only, then picked up a 24-105mm lens from a kit.

It works in practice if you have a receipt. That means something.

Because people are willing to pay it, and it's still cheaper than buying new. And you get the same product as new, minus the box.

ok....but mine was an unused kit lens. I took it out of the white box so I can take some pictures for the sale...but then it went right back into the box. I already have a 24-70, and had previously owned a 24-105, so I never felt the urge to use it. I went from purchase of the kit to the sale market in <30 days. However, I can see that if someone is selling a "new" kit lens that's like 6 months old...then I'd be more skeptical.
