We were at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores out back on the nature trail. I stepped out on a low and narrow little board walk when my 3 year old step grand-daughter spotted it and let me know it tried to strike at my foot.
I was paying more attention to what was up in the trees when I should have been paying attention to what was at my feet.

Water Moccasin.

exciting to say the least.. I about did the same thing opening the farm gate, I got lucky that the rattle snake has a prestrike alarm on him and let me know he was at the gate first!

Good for you, Tim. I was always very careful to watch where I step outdoors, but now that I'm looking up for birds, I feel vulnerable.

Nice capture, However that is a non-venomous water snake.

I was fly fishing in my old homestate of New Jersey once, and I was hip waders in the water. One of these suckers swam right between my legs! Needless to say I was completely frozen.
