Hi everyone I need some advice on what to get
I'm choosing between getting the
canon 430ex II external flash
or the
canon 300mm f4 is usm lens
I like to shoot sports, wildlife and some portraits
right now I have the canon 28-135mm f3.5-5.6
please help


Gear: Canon 450D- Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6- Canon 50 f/1.8- Canon 100-400 L f/4.5-5.6- Canon Speedlite 430EX II- and accessories
Wish: Canon 70-200 L f/2.8 II- Canon 17-55mm f2.8- Canon 100 L f/2.8- Canon 10-22 f/3.5-4.5- Canon 580EX II Speedlite- Pocket Wizard Plus II- and the list goes on....

Hmm, a flash vs. lens decision? that's new.
Well, what do you think you're going to get the most use out of? The 300mm sounds like an ok choice to shoot sports and large wildlife, though the flash could help you get better-lit images if you apply the proper technique in your portraits.

I suggest looking at This Site (external link) to see how flash might fit into your photography, and what's needed to get good results.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

I have to take the view that only you can decide which will serve you best.

Take a serious look at what will make the biggest difference.

Flash makes a huge difference on portraits but so would the lens on sports. I would have to say it will be short for wildlife i think though unless you add a teleconverter.

300mmcwill be short for serious wildlife shooting, but 300 is a lot of reach for someone who doesn't want to stalk blue jays from 400 yards away. No offense to anyone that does that.. Haha
