Thanks for the input guys, i might swap out my 15-85mm IS fort the 17-55mm 2.8 IS, but i really love how sharp the 24-70 is.

Even been contemplating a new prime instead

The 17-55mm is arguably sharper in some situations and a more workable focal length on a crop camera. However, as state earlier in the thread, sharpness isn't as important and a lack of sharpness isn't as apparent when shooting video.

15-85 IS hands down.

Granted I only tried a couple lens but this lens has a good FL and image is sharp through the range. IS is great and more the FTM focusing is a MUST HAVE! The focusing ring and the zoom ring are consistent and smooth on this lens. Love it.

I tried the sigma 70-200 and you have to give yourself some distance from subject but the worse part is that there is no IS and you can get a slight headache watching the footage. I tried the 50mm and it is a lot of fun but again, no IS, makes the picture jumpy.

My tamron does a decent job but the zoom ring is not as smooth through out the zoom range, no full time focus and when manual focus the ring is not as smooth as the 15-85IS.

I borrowed a friend's 18-55 (I sold mine) and it worked ok. Again, focusing is a problem but it seems that at certain point it does not give a nice background like the 15-85.

My choice would be the 17-55 2.8 IS.

Two things you need:

  • Fast constant aperture
  • Image Stabilization
I would never use the 24-70 for video if I was going to do ANY handheld shooting. And 24mm isn't real wide on a crop body.

I would never use the 15-85 due to the variable aperture. Can't use manual exposure settings if the aperture changes as you zoom.

I've been shooting videos for the last 3 months...I love the 24-70 on my 7d. The video quality is amazing. I love shooting wide angled so thats where the lens doesnt do the job for me. I purchased a sigma 10-20 for that job but im not completely happy with the quality and IQ of the lens. Im looking into the 17-55mm lens but am leaning more to the 16-35 just for the L quality.

to be hoenst that sounds like a winning combo - 16-35 and 24-70. Is that the MKII or MK1?

i just started using the movie mode on my 5D2. I have both 16-35 and 24-70 lense. since I am handheld.. the 24-70 is just too heavy after a few minutes or hours in use. the 16-35 is much better for me. plus i can zoom out for wide. If i need to be closer, i normally just walk closer to the subject.

15-85 is fantastic for video on the 7D. I love it, but I use my 28 f1.8 when I am filming indoors or in low light.

If you must know...

Thanks both for the input, i have took some amazing shots with the 15-85mm, but i am yet to attempt some shooting with it, iv used my 50mm throughout so far.

But i am really digging the 16-35mm idea, iv also been contemplating the tokina 11-16mm for a while too to add to the collection, as i currently own the 10-22mm.

If you're interesting in using the 7D for video, check out this guy's experience:

Think I'll have to return my 7D because it can't do any of that stuff. Oh wait ... that's because it is indeed MY 7D and I can't do that stuff. Darn!

The only reason your 7D can't do that stuff, is because it doesn't have all this stuff hanging off it.

If I had to pick a lens and a 7D, I would pick a 24 - 105. Its not crazy fast, but its diverse.

Just a thought, why not purchase a separate camcorder?

Use 15-85 for all your out door stuff. you can try a prime for indoor but I think full time manual focusing and IS are important. I had fun with my 50mm and it worked well when we were in a poorly lit restaurant too but I dont do video nearly as much, or I would get myself a fast prime with usm and IS.
