So I was told that the flash destroyed this picture and that the background was too blurry. I'd like to get some suggestions on how to improve. Camera: Canon EOS 7D (external link) Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200) Aperture: f/8.0 Focal Length: 17 mm ISO Speed: 100 Exposure Bias: 0 EV Flash: On, Fired

Use an off-camera flash, or at least dial down the intensity if you can.

Shooting into the sun adds another level of complexity to a shot. Shooting a sunset is one thing, but posing a subject in front of said sunset complicates things.

I would set-up the shot for the background/sunset, so it's not blown out (nice oranges and blues), then add the flash to bring the light to the subject(s).

This is a difficult shot to pull off. It's far from being "destroyed" so don't be so hard on yourself. Unfortunately the strong flash made your boy blink.

In these types of situations, dial the camera to manual and try a few different exposures with the flash turned down a bit.

I find the most difficult part is convincing your wife and son to be patient while you tinker with your camera!:D:D
