I just bought a Canon 50d with a Tamron 17-50mm lens and own a speedlite 380EX, 430EX and a 540EZ. Would any of these work well or should i upgrade?

The EX ones should be fine, the 540EZ will work in manual I believe.

The 380ex has no manual control, the 430ex and 540ez will work great though.

The 380EX is an E-TTL flash so it'll work just fine on the 50D also. It just can't be used in manual mode.

The 430EX will work in ETTL and manual mode. That's the one I would use - in fact, it's one of the units I do use.

The 540EZ would only work in Manual...EZ units are not ETTL compatible.

The 380EX or 430EX would work in ETTL or in Manual.

OK, good. Now we've cleared up the conflicting info. :D

So, to summarize, the 50D (and all EOS DSLR cameras for that matter) will work with the following flashes in the specified modes:

380EX = E-TTL mode only
430EX = E-TTL and Manual modes
540EZ = Manual mode only
