Hi,

I am using Photoshop CS4 and having very difficult time apply henna tatto to the image attached. I am looking to apply a realistic looking tatto that goes all the way from wrist to fingers/thumb. Any attempts I have made did not work because of the way hand is folded. I cannot make the push at Z axis so it looks fake.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Thank you guys. I like this but I think I will show you which way I am trying to go. A bit portion of the tatto should be on the palm and tht is where I have issues. I will post a bad example shortly :D

Ok, here is my take on this. The main problem I see if that it looks fake a floating, especially in the palm. I have tried using a high contract layer alpha channel and using it with bend the top image as well but that did not help either.

Thanks.

How about this:

I used the original photo of a hand to create a displacement map which was then saved as a PSD file.
Then I converted the tattoo file to a brush; that way I could alter size, opacity, etc. without having to worry about the white background.
I then reopened the photo of the hand, positioned the tattoo brush, and played around with blend modes and opacity. When I was satisfied, I used Filter > Distort > Displace to bring in the displacement map file which tells Photoshop how to replicate the contours of the hand.

If needed you can still adjust opacity of the tattoo to taste. You can also use layer masks at low opacity to remove some of the sharpness at the edges of the tattoo so it would appear more realistic.

Thanks PixelMagic. I did try the displacement map but I did not place the top layer as a brush. This method does seem to give you better control.

I still am a bit challanged with the results though. If you look at the hand there is a portion of the palm that is a bit hidden from the view. Since I am trying to create a tattoe that goes from wrist to fingers/thumb, hidden portion of the palm would be hiding a portion of the tatto as well. That is where I am having the issue. If I look at all of the examples so far, they all show continous tatto image with no clues to part of it being hidden from the view.

I hope I am making some sense here.

Thanks.

I did show a little of that in my first example but how is this?

What you need to do is place the tattoo on several layers then move, rotate and mask off areas until it appears how you want.

The best way is to roughly draw on your own hand (with washable ink!) then look at how it falls to your eye and recreate that in PS. It all comes down to artistic licence.

The solution is to simply add a layer mask to obscure the portion of the tattoo that you want hidden from view. Either that or make adjustments to the default settings of the adjustment filter so that the tattoo conforms to the shape of the hand.

Had a few minutes ;)

First used Transform > Warp to get the 'tattoo' more 'hand shaped', then this (Used a higher contrast grayscale of the hand for displacement map):

Edit: Wrong profile embedded. Weird. Time for a reboot....
Ah well, looks slightly better in PS.

Thank you all for your help. I guess I will have to keep try different things until I find the right mix I like :-)
