Would cropping help, and if so, how would you recommend?

Here's a photo I took yesterday, and while I like the overall picture, it doesn't have any "oomph". I think the tips in the bottom right are a bit distracting, but I can't see how to crop the photo and make it look right. Also, with all those pine needles it's just so busy!

Can it ever be anything more than just a pretty picture?

I looked at it for a while... I think you have the best crop, anything different it just wouldn't look right. It not a very interesting pic to begin with. Try to clone out the bud at the right bottom corner and I think that is as good as it will get.

I would crop it so the main bud is in the bottom right hand corner.

rule of thirds.

Something like this would be what Amanda M. is talking about? If so, I agree.

Try vertical - like this
To me, it's the most obvious

I think that vertical looks good too. :)

horizontal crop for me. more pleasing comp with the buds off center and gives the needles more depth and energy.

Try looking inside the whorls of needles instead of shooting through them, it gives , for me anyways, a far better effect.

you're a great friend, but if Zombies chase us, I am tripping you.

Ooh I like your crop too Phil! The whole whorl thing is what I went through several shots trying to achieve, but I think another trip up to the wood is in order!

i would try revisiting that and taking a slightly more downward angle on it.
