There seem to be lots of these guys around here. I'm just beginning to shoot birds and am amazed at how many shots I take to get maybe 1 keeper, lol.
Would love to have CC on this one. 40D 6.3 1/500 iso 500 at 500mm Also, is overcast today.
Thanks, Janie

Wow Jag....how lucky you are to have one of these around. We had one hanging around here, but haven't seen him in a couple of years, and never got a shot of him. Great capture.

Nice shot for your first attempts, the actual point of focus seems to be around the plane of the foot rather than the head. IT's always best to try and get the focus on the eye, easier said than done :D

A nice shot, Janie. I like the composition and colours. It's a bit difficult to tell, but it looks as if focus was behind its head and eye. They look a bit soft whereas the feet and that bit of branch look sharp and in focus. Try focusing on the eye of the bird next time.

edit: when I was typing my comment Ken beat me to it. Oh well... :)

It does look like I missed the eye as the focal point, now that it is pointed out to me. Thanks for all the comments, and I will continue to practice. These guys are thick where I live, so I'm sure I will get another chance.

Very nice shot of a hard to find woodpecker, such a beautiful bird... your are fortunate you are to have this many Red-headed Woodpeckers in your area... they are in decline in most of their range, throughout North America...
