Just got the lens back from Canon, looks like they did a pretty good job. I had to send it in because it would not go to F4.5 and was reporting all the wrong focal lengths. I think it's better than when it was new, and focuses a whole lot faster and i think more accurate. This is straight out of camera and cropped to 80% but no sharpening at all. Your thoughts please.

It looks sharp enough for ISO 400 and no PP sharpening. Did you shoot it in RAW, so no in-camera sharpening applied?

Hi Mitch, the only thing i did was convert to jpeg and crop 80% no in camera sharpen or CS4 either. Like i said other than the crop it's SOOC.

Many early adopters seemed to have had bad cameras. One fellow I run into in the field, whom I always saw with a 100-400 a few years back, upgraded to a 500/4, and told me that "now I finally have a lens that outresolves the camera", and that was the 20D.

Various older web comparisons showed 100-400 lenses that were as bad as being as soft without a TC than mine is with a 4x stack. There were apparently a lot of really bad copies going around years ago.

Hey John, mine would not report the F4.5 @ 100mm no matter what i tried, it was always reporting the wrong focal length i.e. 400mm when it was at 100mm and the focus was hit and miss.
I thought the issues were user rather than equipment so i took it in to the camera shop and they confirmed.
I purchased this lens from B&H 18 months ago, not sure if thats the time frame you were refering to. Any how its back and better than ever.

Looks like it was well worth it to send it in to canon. This lens is the only lens I use, luckily it was sharp from day 1. Great capture Woody.

Thanks Sharon, I love this lens, but didn't realize it had a problem until recent. Now i can't wait to see what i can do when i get a chance to shoot.

Image quality is great. How far do you reckon you were from your subject?
