I got it to go on but it doesnt feel right..I'm thinking the lensmate is to blame

the lensmate when you twist it on to the camera, torwards the end of the twist the whole thing ovals slightly..

plus it doesnt have much thread on the lensmate. the lens hood has like 1/4 of thread. it also has a ring on it to adjust the stop position. that ring threads on/off the lens hood just fine

I remember seeing on the lensmate website a "tip" to leave your filter/whatever on the lensmate. so you can put the lensmate on when you need to use the filter.

I think what their really trying to say is they know its a PITA to get it threaded on. then they can sell more lensmates too that way. HAH

bah I hate stupid little things like this

I have the lensmate 58mm adapter and find it flimsy and difficult to use. If you tighten the bayonet mount to the camera too far, it will then loosen up and come off. Trying to screw a filter into its threads has been very tricky also. Not happy with it but haven't found anything else to use when I want a polarizing filter. It definitely does screw on in but requires patience and dexterity.

It's better than nothing, but not very good. I believe they made it weak so people couldn't ruin their camera by trying to screw heavy conversion lenses on. I blame Canon for not treading the lens for 52 mm filters in the first place.

And if Canon had threaded it for 52 mm filters and people'd tried mounting conversion lenses, damaging the camera, then whose fault would it be? The camera was not designed to handle extra weight on the front of the lens, in order to keep the zoom mechanism within reasonable weight and size limits.

I'm glad its not just me then

at first I was being careful with it. I was afraid it might cross thread. but its virtually impossible for it to thread on being gentle

I have to give it a good push and turn. and then you get about 1 full turn (at most I think) and its on.. kinda disappointing but like you guys said no one else makes a 58mm adapter :(

got a reply from lensmate:

Hi Scott ,

Can you thread a 58mm filter on the Lensmate filter adapter?

What hood are you using, the Hakuba rubber hood ? Unless you have a
58mm filter it will be hard to discern if it is the adapter threads of
the hood treads that are out of spec.

---------------

all the 58mm stuff should have the same thread pitch I would think?

Should, but cheap manufacturers may not be all that careful. I've even seen filters and hoods with molded plastic filter rings, complete with mold marks.

I've decided I'm going to use the Canon lens hood and keep a CIR-PL filter on the lensmate. with the filter it reflects the light anyway the hood shouldnt be needed when its on

my original plan was to keep the lensmate on all the time and use 58mm everything. but it looks like that might not be feasible

I did some more experimenting

if I have the lensmate off the camera and try threading it onto the hood it goes on easier. still takes a couple tries but alot better

A great big ole WARNING against conversion lenses should have kept Canon safe from libility, just like they warn you not to get the camera wet etc.

Well now there is another 58mm Filter Adapter for SX10 / SX20 Cameras. It's called Janco 58mm Filter Adapter (external link). I was told this is a metal one unlike plastic lensmate adapter. Bought one from Amazon but haven't received it yet.

Anyway did you try fixing this hood into your polarizing filter ? If that works you can use it with a UV filter I think. Also what's the name of this Hood you bought ?

I've got the Bower adapter and it is metal. It works well. It is a little tough to get on, but it works. haven't had a chance to shoot with it yet, but spring is right around the corner!!! :-)
