The solution is to go out and shoot a whole bunch of test shots (hundreds) where there is no-one else to interfere with lighting. If it happens in any of them, it's the shutter. If not, then it might be a freak flash incident.

This is a free test, except for your time, and definitely worth doing before sending the camera off to Canon for evaluation/repair.

My money's on the shutter.

Roger gives good advice, and is really only the one thing to do -- get out and shoot a bunch of pictures.

I could imagine that with the shutter speed faster than a flash strobe you could get some funny effects (you do using a too fast shutter speed for your own flash) but that long straight line -- so straight, it just doesn't seem right for a flash away from the shooter. I could be wrong, and hope I am:)!

OP said that there were about 3 out of a 100 like this.

I just had something like this happen to me at an event but I was using flash. Only 2 or 3 shots out of 125 had something like this and there was another photog flashing near me. I'll post an example when I get a chance.

only with 3 shots out of 150. If it were another photogs strobe would it overexpose like it did just on one very defined plane? It lights up from the floor in front to the back row of the lower section. This shot was not cropped. Shot vertically so the line would be across the top of the photo in landscape orientation. I shot about 70 shots today in my studio and it didn't seem to have any issues. Seems like it could be the beginnings of a shutter failure to me, but I wasn't sure exactly.

not a camera tech here, but nice shot of DeLonte West!

Hope you weren't there with your gear to get shots of LeBron!

Lastly, the guy who sits near me shooting HS games uses a flash. I often get his flash in my pic. It doesn't look anything like what you got. When his flash meets my shutter, I can see it in the entire shot--not anything like as shown in your shot.

dave

I actually took my niece to see LeBron as she is a huge fan, so needless to say it was pretty disappointing. Here's a couple from the game.

Here's one of the shots it happened to me, only happened at the beginning of the night when I was near the other photog and haven't had an issue since. I have 1 more like this but the line is in a different place (I'll post that too when I get a chance)

Haven't had an issue since.

Second is to show the issue better.

Neck strap?

Couldn't be mine (I had a 70-200 on there  ) and the other photog was about a table away. There's one other shot where this happened and the pattern is the exact same just more towards the middle of the frame.

EDIT: I think I may have found my issue. After hearing DAMphyne's suggestion about the neckstrap, that got me to thinking if there was anything possibly obstructing the lens and I remember these table top plants that had white'ish stems that could possibly cause what I'm seeing.

As for OP, do you have any shots of those exact stands without the issue that we could see? Looking closer at the pic you posted, I'm thinking it was another photogs strobes going off because of the harsh shadows near the bleachers and near the wall at the top left of the shot.

So you have a reference here's what my MKIIN did at just under 60,000 clicks. These are cropped but they were shot in portrait position. One of the middle leafs stuck, causing it to over expose the middle and in the last photo you see where the leaf covered the sensor. I had another camera body with so I could still shoot the game, if you shoot professionally always carry a backup.

My guess is your shutter is starting to fail.

Last good frame.
