I was looking at some compact fluorescent bulbs this morning and while thinking about the wattage equivalents between fluorescent and incandescent I started to wonder if there were other similar relationships between other bulbs.

For instance, specifications on a 23 Watt CFL show it to output the same amount of light (lumens, I assume) as a 100 Watt incandescent bulb.

How does this work with Tungsten or Halogen bulbs? Is the light output the same for similar wattages or are there other relationships that define the output of those bulbs compared to an incandescent?

First, to nitpick, voltage isn't the same wattage, which is a power (V x A) rating.

I'm no expert on the topic, but I don't think there's any particular conversion from electrical power input (W) to light intensity output (cd, or candelas) or luminous flux (lumens). Heck, just frosting the bulb of the light will affect the light output.

Perhaps we can (sort of) define a rough efficiency range for types of bulbs. CFLs require less watts per candela than incandescents, for example. Is that what you mean?

Hi Angelo,

Thanks. That was my bad and I fixed it. I meant to type Wattage, not voltage.

Here is what I mean.....

According to the specification for CFL bulbs, a 23 Watt CFL is supposed to output the same amount of light as the 100 Watt incandescent.

Now if I take a 100 Watt halogen will it output the same amount of light as the 100 Watt incandescent?
