Matt,

really nice shots. From years of umpiring baseball, on a bang-bang play at the plate, if the throw beats the runner to the plate and is handled cleanly AND the catcher has good position, (plate blocked) makes a tag and holds onto the ball in the process, the runner is called out, UNLESS I could clearly see the runner touch the plate ahead of a tag.

My guess is that (even though I can't see the plate in your pic) that the runner was called out.

Really like #4 and 6. I tried to get some of those shots last year, but each time I thought a RH batter would hit on to the left side of the infield, it would go the OTHER way! Baseball/softball is tough to shoot action because of the unpredictability of the game!

What did you shoot with a 400 f/2.8? Shots are beautiful.

Great shots eigga... player has the base/plate blocked so the runner is OUT....OR player was tagged high and runner slid under the tag...so she is definatly, maybe, kinda of sort of out....or safe????

I LOVE pic #5 the way she is showing the ball and the intensity on her face...well done!

Correct... out at home. Thanks for the comments

#5 is also my favorite. I have grown to really like that angle... its not easy to get the ball right where you want it and for some cutting off the glove might not be the best angle but I have found the better my shots show off the eyes (especially when smiling or intense) the better they sell

Great series. I like how the facial expresssions were captured on all.

I'm wondering were the UMP is in that picture...unless there was some sort of rotation on the play shouldn't the ump have been in the background of that shot in position to make the call so he/she wasn't at the back of either player?

I would have to agree. I always hated bang-bang plays. There was NO way I could be right. One coach always whined and complained. Also, being in proper position can really limit the amount of argument the coach may have. I always sold the call regardless. I have found that if I am confident in my call, the less arguing by the coaches.

I like #2 and #5 the best, but they all look great. I love the 400 f/2.8 :)

Hard to say without seeing the plate, but if she slide into the tag ( ball beat her to the plate ),
I'd call her out even though a coach may argue she was under it.

I believe the ump was just out of view on the left and camera side of the play. The throw came from shallow left field so it would make sense to me for the ump to cheat down the 1st base line to get a good view. Im just glad he was out of my way wherever he was :)

I love #5. Number 6 is also great but for the background. The tight images have the extra "Wow" factor. Love them all.

OUT, catcher is blocking the plate.

If it was the umpires in the league I coached they'd give the out sign and yell safe and then ask what sport they're officiating. :)

Seriously though my catcher blocked the plate, tagged a kid out at least 5 feet from the plate, kid never made it, he was called safe as my catcher looked behind him going "the plates back there!"
