wow, that is one big front element. The Sigma 50mm uses a 77mm front filter thread. This 85mm looks even bigger (and bigger than the 85L) I'm guessing this will probably sell in the $1200 range. They will price it in between the Canon versions.

O M G. That's a motherload of glass. The front element is gigantor. By the looks of things.. it seems like it'll cost more then my conservative estimate of $800?

Love the huge front element. Can't wait to see the price performance of this beast.

It's 77mm, same as the 50. The 85L is 72mm (I know you have one, but for comparison's sake).

I don't think it'll be as much as $1200. I'd be surprised to see it above $1000.

I'd be surprised if it's over $600. They make a 50mm f/1.4 and price it at $499. That's way less than the 50L and not a lot more than Canon's 50 1.4. ;)

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Aaah, but you see, Sigma knows that there is a $1600 difference between the Canon 85mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.2, and given that this is probably targeted to steal market away from the 85L 1.2 (since it is closer in aperture to the 1.2 than 1.8 ), my guess is that will price it closer to the 85L than the 85 1.8. Additionally, the Nikon 85mm 1.4 is priced at $1229, and this would be competition for that lens as well, so I'm sure they will price it slighlty less to pull market share from that camp as well. $1200 may be high estimate, but I'm sure it will be approximately $1000 or more. (I'm hoping I'm wrong on this, though)

While I see what David is saying, I'm definitely hoping you're right. If it's $600, I'm pre-ordering. C.R.I.S. (Arizona Sigma repair facility) will fix any AF issues, most likely...they're well-practiced with the 50/1.4.

I am still putting my guess in that this 85 will be in the 600-650 range

Sigma generally prices their products fairly. I am not too worried about it.

I love their build - if this turns out to be a winner, I will likely make the switch from the 85 1.8.

I will be curious to see how this fares. Sigma has some stiff competition from Canon in the 85MM offerings. Both are very nice lenses, and well received. This lens is gonna have to work to earn people's money from the Canon versions.
