Can a 5D MkII handle sports?

I have the once in a lifetime opportunity to purchace either a 7D or the 5D MkII.
My issue is that I love to cover sport photography (currently with a 40D), including air displays etc, but I have also set up a small home studio.
Now, the 7D can blitz the sport side of things, but I really am tugging towards the 5D MkII for the studio... so I guess my exam question for you experts is "Would the 7D cover the studio work fine (ISO etc, FF etc) or can I get the 5D MkII with confidence of handling the sports as well as mastering the studio"?
Would love to see some 7D studio and 5D MkII sports shots from you experts as well as viewing your expert advice.

Why not get the 7d now, wait a few months and save up for a 5d classic?

You can have both. Buy your 7D for the high speed work and then buy a 5D classic for your studio work. The extra features of the 5DII really don't mean much in the controlled environment of working in a studio. The full frame sensor on the other hand makes a very big difference on the image produced. The price of a 5dII should cover these 2 bodies easily.

What lenses you got for sports? I am just asking as cost of lenses is typically lot more than the body.

I'm no pro but I think the 5DMKII can do sports just fine. Its not a 1DMKIV ..... but it can do sports.
The 7D may produce more keepers but still, the 5DMKII can do sports.

If you were fine using your 40D for sports, than the 5D2 should work just as well (here I was wrong about the fps, 40D is faster). The only thing you would be missing when using a FF, would be the reach, which is quite important when shooting sports I think.

I have a 7D, and shoot mostly sports. I love it. I was recently at an NBA game covering it, and the photog next to me used a 7D mostly, but used a 5Dmk2 to get some wide angle shots, and would get a few keepers. So I think it can do it, but the 7D is obviously the better choice for sports....

Just my two cents.

5dII can definitely do sports. The only area it lacks in really is FPS. What sort of sports do you like to do? Will they really need more than 3.9 fps?

Uhhhh where are you getting the info that the 5DII is a higher fps than the 40D?

40D is 6.5fps
5DII is 3.9fps

Yes, a 5DMK2 can do sports. So can a drugstore point & shoot, a brownie box camera, or a 4X5 view camera with bellows, tripod, and loupe. Choose your torture.

Or do it the easy way and get a 1D series.

Yeah, you're right, sorry about that. I've just done a quick google search and it came up with the answer that 40D has 3 fps. Never really thought of 40D so didn't need the info before. Anyway, sorry for that confusion.

You don't need a 1-series camera to do sports. The 7d is plenty fast. The 5d is better than the 7d for shots of the athletes on the sidelines or while not in extreme motion. It all depends on the type of shooting you do, the types of sports you shoot, etc.

Depends on what kind of sports. I shot indoor swim meets in poorly lit pools with the 5D2. Although its nice iso performance allowed me to crank up the shutter speed to freeze motion, the AF in low light was slow and AI Servo was unreliable. The FPS was too slow to capture butterfly, of course breast stroke is okay. However, I was told that the AF performance could be improved by using the AF assist beam from a Speedlite (just remember not to fire the flash!) but I haven't gotten a chance to test that.

Did anyone try to use the 380EX' AF assist on a 5D2? Does the AF assist beam on the older 380EX work with 5D2 or any current Canon DSLR?
