Im baffled by the long list of specs on the 550, 50, and 7D. trying to differebntiate between them is a nightmare - I went FF a long while ago and am no longer au fait with the crop of crop cameras ( pun geddit?)

Is there anyone out there who can give me a synopsis of the advantages of one over the others?

My wife ( to be) currently has a 350 and a few things irritate her about it:

1/ the image quality is OK but could b better, although I appreciate that depends to some extent on the glass in use.

2/ the LCD is tiny ( this is super annoying she says)

apart form that it's not bad at all.

---3/Ability to take videos would be great also ---

Shoots landscapes, buildings and family mostly, not sports or macro

Please give us the benefit of your esteemed advices everyone!

thanks you:D

If money is no object, the 7D is the best of the three. Best ergonomics, best performance, fastest speed.

The 50D has similar ergonomics to the 7D, but 6.3 fps instead of 8, not as robust of an AF system, and 15 MP vs 18 MP. No video.

The 550D has much of the feature set of the 7D, but in a smaller, slower body. The ergonomics of the XXXD line tend to be a bit less efficient than the 50D or 7D. It also will be slower (AF and fps) than either the 50D or 7D.

In short, the 50D is an excellent camera, and the 7D is basically a 50D on steroids. The 550D is the 7D's little brother.

I would have to agree BUT is she going to use the camera as well? The 7D is pretty weighted so you should take that into consideration. If she loves the weight/balance/size of the rebel, then get the 550D, otherwise go try the 7D.

You may love the 7D but she may never pick it up, who's gonna be happy then?

Which is why anyone buying a DSLR really needs to put hands on the camera before buying. It is really a personal fit.

If you don't need the video... the build quality, the extra AF points (most people don't), the higher MP (most people don't), or the higher FPS, I'd go with the 550D. The 50D won't even be a big step up.

According to this review: http://www.the-digital-picture.com …al-SLR-Camera-Review.aspx (external link)

the new T2i seems to perform better at higher ISO settings than 50D which seems to be the worst high ISO performer among all the newer Canon DSLRs. Though 7D is currently the best 1.6 crop dslr Canon offers

my best advice, buy the 7d so you dont feel like you have to upgrade in a few months!!!! The canon instant rebate right now save 100-200 dollars, so it a good time to buy. I own a xti and upgrade to a t1i and 6 months latter wanted a 7d your better off buying the best camera you can afford so that you dont have to ever worrry about second guessing your decsion and wanting to upgrade latter.

If u end up getting the t2i in the back of your mind your going to want to upgrade trust me!!!! Plus your not going to even use the video that much!!!!! VIdeo nice to have but honestly I rarely ever use it!!!!

550D:
-Cheaper , newer Cmos sensor , 18MP, new metering technology, lighter, smaller.
Better ISO. No weather sealing on the body. Video 1080P

50D:
- A bit bulky , Microadjust capability, nice crosss type 9 AF sensor vs. 550D 1 cross type only. Weather sealed body.
Better LCD. Less playing with buttons and concentrate more on the subject- no video and bling bling....
Less likely to have problem with repair, I guess? less electronic gizmo inside to fu.k up...:-)

7D:
- Will take you a while to upgrade for the next DLSR body. You`ll have the tendency to lose 60% of your finger tips- Too many buttons to play with .
Better AF system, but you don`t shoot sports....
- It looks cool! :p
- When you get one, we know you are broke! ;)

Going by what your wife has gripes with...

1. IQ is largely dependent on lenses, 550D and spend the money you save over the 7D on lenses.
2. LCD, the 550D has the best LCD canon makes right now
3. Video, the 550D has all the video features more expensive DSLRs have

Summary, get the 550D and spend the money you save over the 7D on lenses.

Note: A large drawback the 550D has is both the 7D and 50D have microadjust, the 550D does not, just something to think about.

If you plan to upgrade to FF, then 550D, otherwise the 7D should last you a while. Video is great on both.

I have a 500D right now, when I get a couple more lenses, I'm gonna go FF, 5Dii.

There is also the rumored 60D coming out that is going to replace the 50D.

A CR2 source athttp://www.canonrumors.com/ (external link) says there's not going to be a 60D..we'll see.
