Disregard..I double checked the seller and I bought a softbox from him 1 year ago... The quality of the softbox was good but the speedring was a piece of junk! Bended and broke after 6 uses :( Good thing the softbox was only $30 :)

I've never ordered ebay softboxes but I do have some of the cheap ebay speed rings and they suck, plain and simple. I can understand people wanting to save money and not enthusiastic about $30-$50 for a speed ring but it really does make a difference.

The cheap speed rings I have not only have a loose fit when mounted to the strobe, but the insert jiggles inside the outer ring, the fittings are 'iffy' and the hardware is not of good quality. I absolutely can't recommend cheap crap speed rings. :D

Yup..cheap speedrings are the worst... I learned my lesson wasting $30; I gave the softbox to a friend that is using it for his strobist kit. I prefer to spend more cash and get only proper gear (although getting that Speedo will be my first step out of Elinchrom gear, I feel safe since so many have posted awesome reviews).

My first set of speed rings (with Elinchrom insert) were also from eBay. As mentioned, they sucked. I replaced them with Calumet speed rings (with their Elinchrom insert) and the quality is much better.

HOWEVER... I do have an issue even with Calumet product (the Elinchrom insert, specifically). For some very strange reason, only one of the mounting slots in the Elinchrom insert will properly lock onto my D-Lite 4s. Example: I'll call the two slots (cutouts) in the insert slot A and slot B. If I install the insert onto my D-Lite with slot A near the D-Lite's sliding lock lever, and then lock the lever, the insert can STILL be turned counterclockwise (facing the flash tube) and pulled out of the D-Lite (accidentally or otherwise). However, if I rotate the insert 180º and install slot B closest to the sliding lock lever, the insert stays put when the lock lever is turned to lock.

It's the strangest damn thing! The slots in the Elinchrom insert appear to be absolutely identical. Yet, installed one way they won't properly lock and install the other way they lock perfectly. This is consistent across all three Calumet speed rings/Elinchrom inserts that I own and I've tried them all in three different D-Lite 4s with the same results.

Now somebody explain THAT one to me! (And I'd be curious if anyone else is experiencing this with other brands of Elinchrom inserts??)

Mark

Wow Mark. I've never heard of that. I've heard all the variations on wiggle room but in every case both cutouts locked properly on the posts. Have you taken any measurements to see if there is a difference that the eye is not perceiving?
