Hey all,

My rebel xt was just stolen with my lens (tamron 18-270), and I have upgraded to a canon 40D and would like to make a nice investment on good lens(es) for the camera. Would I be better off buying something higher end? or an assortment. I plan on investing more in the future.

I guess I'll leave it up to you guys. What should I do with $700?

The only lens that I have right now is a 1.8 50mm.

For a D40 I would suggest a 35mm 1.8G if you want to stock with primes. 18-200 VR if you want an all around lens for travels.

If you can save a bit more money I would say a 17-55 f2.8 would be everything you need for a crop body.

D40 or 40D? How about Tamron 17-50 and Canon 85-1.8, if you're talking 40D?

+1. You could try the VC version as well.

Firstly, I assume you mean 40D (i.e. Canon not Nikon?)....

Before everyone jumps in telling you that a $2000 35L is the best walkabout lens on an intermediate pro-sumer body.... :p

I've been reading good things about the Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS which I believe clocks in at just under US$700. It has optical stabilisation, a decent range, critically on the wider end, and whilst its not fast, if you're walking about at night, get a tripod and the f/6.3 issue disappears.

Interested to see what everyone else has to say :)

A used Sigma 17-70mm can be had for $300 and then buy a Canon 70-200mm ƒ/4L for $450-500. A bit over budget but it would be a great combo and yield very good IQ whilst retaining a decently fast aperture.

Apparently I've been dubbed Foxy.

Tamron 17-50 2.8 or Canon 18-55IS + other stuff you need - e.g. a good flash
