Folks,
I have a question concerning the new lens MKII

On Canon's site they state the following.

It features a next-generation Optical Image Stabilizer, providing up to 4 stops of correction at all focal lengths.

What exactly does that mean? I would think a 2.8 is a 2.8 regardless if it was the MKI or the new MKII. So I am confused as to what stops they are talking about here. I currently have the MKII just trying to understand the differences here.

They are referring to shutter speed. The image stabilizer will reduce camera shake at slower shutter speeds. For example, at 200 mm on FF, you need ~1/250 sec for a crisp shot. The 4 stops will get you down to around 1/20 sec.

I hope that makes sense.

Yes it does make sense thanks! My guess is that this will help for Portrait Photography but not necessarily for sports as you need the higher shutter anyway right?

Correct. Image Stabilizers helps with camera shake. With moving subjects such as sports, you'll need a fast shutter speed.

^^ unless of course you are panning (horizontally or vertically), then there is mode 2 IS and even more lovely motion blur to be had ;)

BTW ... I have taken sharp, hand held shots with this thing of stationary objects at just 1/6 sec - same shot without IS looks like I am riding a skateboard down a cobbled street :D

^^ He doesn't know, its still in the box! - read previous page ;)

I used T4 Cameras a lot in the past, but feel the level of service is not what it once was (prior the its founder, Tom, retiring) ... wanted to get my recent camera purchases from them, but got the feeling they just couldn't be bothered shipping to me here in Portugal, so in the end the faceless giant with better prices, good but anonymous customer service and cheap as chips shipping won out :(

Seriously though, two things about this shot: I can't believe she has a Barrett too. Also, I can't believe the Barrett isn't painted.
