Thanks for the feedback guys. I've gotten used to the weight of my 17-55/7d combo. Hope its the same with this big lens.

Well to make it easier for you 17-55/7D combo is so much easier to handle. :p
Note though that I always have my grip on my 7D, so it adds additional weight but as Julian said it helps a lot in balancing besides everything else..
70-200 2.8 IS II is a heavy lens no doubt. But once you start shooting with it, then you'll forget about weight, size etc etc.. ;)

Hey guys how heavy is this lens with a 7d? This lens may be my next purchase. Awesome shots.

I rented this lens this past week. when I picked it up the first time, my thoughts were that I would NOT be able to use it, due to its weight. So I muttered thru taking a few shots. After I saw how awesome they were, I never once thougth about the weight again. Well, except after I carried it back, my arm was a little sore.. But it is takes the best pictures I've ever had come out of my camera.

The 70 X 200 gives a whole new meaning of purpose and need for getting my neck and upper body stretched professionally every two weeks. Some of that meaning comes from hours of bad positioning posture wise of the body when working the keyboard for deletions. Senior users will certainly have some need to space the work time periods with this new lens and the older bodies of the photographer. My issues so far have not been outside of what I think is common sense. I believe the lens may in time help those who have or develop muscular aches and pains. I'm seventy five. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. That means I'm sticking to the 20 X 200 and the leadership of this forum hoping to become a little better each time out.

Sure - not a problem! Thanks for the comments.

I was at about 125mm (I was standing near 3rd base)
ISO was at 400 - it was a bright, bright, sunny day, but I wanted a fast shutter
Aperture was at f/2.8
Shutter speed was at 1/8000 sec - even 1/4000 wasn't quite freezing the action of the bat and ball.

I set the camera to use a single focal point and pre-focused. With my left eye, I could see the pitcher throw the ball (slow pitch), so I kind of knew when the swing was coming. I tried a few of these in 8fps mode, but I got hit or miss results with getting the ball on bat contact, so I tried my skills with timing the swing and I got lucky on this shot.

The technique of watching the pitcher with my left eye (right-eye in the camera) didn't work so well when I was down by 1st base as the camera was between my eye and the pitcher, so I just started paying attention to the batter's motion. A few swings and I was able to start predicting when to shoot. As soon as I saw that front foot start to come up, I knew the swing was getting started. The great thing about a home run derby is that you get PLENTY of practice shooting batters. I found that this event was a great help to my skills.

Oh yeah - in case you're wondering about the shallow DOF from where I was standing, I 'enhanced' it a bit with Alien Skin's Bokeh. The players really like that effect and it makes them stand out.

Here's the same shot SOOC with just some tweaking in ACR to show what the original DOF looked like at this focal length:
