Thanks again Dean.....one more question, depending on my access, is there any chance of just using the 70-200L alone, without the TC? I m such a newbie at this, lol...

Assuming you're using your crop body, if you want to fill the frame, you will want to be within maybe 20-30 yards. That's great if you are on the inside of a turn, but if you want to shoot from the outside of the corner (great for getting all of the bike and sponsor stickers), you will have a hard time getting close enough for safety reasons.

When I'm covering bikes, I use my 70-200 100%..........and only on occasion do I use anything
bigger.

But as stated, on large tracks, outside line, long glass is a must!!!

Depends how close you will be. But with a FF body, 200 mm definitely won´t be enough. This was shot with 400mm lens and APS-C body (640mm equiv. on FF). As you can see, the guy in the photo uses a 70-200 but he is a few metres from the track.

So I recommend you to borrow something that is at least 400 mm long (I recommend 100-400, but even a longer prime could be useful). Remember, you can always move back, but it can be very difficult to move closer.

It all depends on the track! Some tracks put you far away even if your inside the "walls". The first time I go to a track I bring my 70-200, 300, and a 400, then find out which is best for on track stuff. If I am shooting on the grid or in the paddock, I use my 24-70 2.8. I will be using a 500 mm for the next 3 days at Infinion Raceway here in California. They keep you WAAYYYY off the track, since NASCAR has come there. They moved the fences back. The conditions are supposed to be sunny and 70 degrees. I am not credentialed.

Here is a shot from last year with the 500 mm:

rent the 70-200 f/2.8 IS and a 100-400L...I shot the grand prix of long beach with the 70-200...on a 40D but I did my research for the track and visited the track prior to the day. Know your angles so when shooting f/2.8 the tires don't look frozen, expose for asphalt, dirt then adjust from there ( yes shoot manual! ), create CWB every 30-60 minutes. For panos go 1/125-1/250 tops

f/2.8
