We've known for quite some time that a version 2 of the PLM with 7mm shaft was in the works. Today Paul Buff inserted a tantalizing tidbit in a message he posted on his tech forum (emphasis mine):

"PLM V2 (about 6 weeks away) actually uses a speedring to put the flash dead-on-axis and the focus is more controllable. An Elinchrom speedring is also being made, and it has an adjustable 7mm shaft that doesn't protrude behind the light (if used without the speed ring.) I will be filing a patent on this design."

Interesting that he feels a dedicated Elinchrom speed ring is required considering the almost perfect positioning of Elinchrom's umbrella tube. Now I'm curious. Too bad the v2 PLM is ALWAYS 6 weeks away :(

Hmmmmm, I'm intrigued. I don't exactly understand the concept of using a speed ring. I've never actually heard anyone complain about a few inches of the umbrella rod sticking through the strobe and out the back.

6 weeks isn't bad if it's 6 weeks. :D

You have to keep in mind that PCB weeks are like dog weeks so we're really talking 42 calendar weeks.

Just kidding PCB fans; don't get your drawers in a knot.

well the only issue i have (potentially) is that the silver reflective umbrella still has the stand and strobe in the image. dedicated octoboxes don't have this issue since the light is in the front.

in the mean time, i will continue waiting for the plm 2. i am a patient grass hoppaa

i have the medium PLM right now that mounts like an umbrella would. so the advantage of the V2 is that the light will be more centered/on axis v. the slight off-axis of the current PLM?

Oh damn. I'm excited. Since I'm selling my ABs, my Kaeser brolly boxes just became useless.

What's the word on these PLM v2? If PCB backs out on making one for Elinchrom, what are our options? Do we pray for the v1 to come back in stock and mod it? Or if they never go back in stock should I buy a golf umbrella and modify that? Lol.

PLM V2 with 7mm shaft and optional Elinchrom central mount adapter is still a go at the moment, Sean. That according to a post from PCB. Even so, if I were you, I'd hedge my bets and start working on a modified golf umbrella right about now.

A question for you EChrom guys; The hang up seems to be the 7mm umbrella shaft hole. So, what is keeping all the DIYers from taking an 8mm drill and reaming the hole bigger?

I find it hard to believe that there isn't 1mm of "stuff" available for the mod.

The Echrom problem with the retro reflector is the light pattern. PCB has said that the PLM with the centered mounting system is still on track.
