I'm having the toughest decision of upgrading to a secondary camera body for sports. Price also plays an important factor, so I'm relying on this forum to help me make an intelligent decision on what camera body works best for shooting sports. Please provide any details to their Pros & Cons. My next camera must be equipped to handle low light conditions with ease, great and fast AF system, about 6 fps minimum, and sharp and clear images. bw!

1st Choice: 1D MKIII used

2nd Choice: 7D new

3rd Choice: 50D new

4th Choice: 1D MKIIn Used

Canon USA Gear! Cameras: 5D MKIII & 7D L Lenses: 24mm-70mm f/2.8, 85mm f/1.2 II, 70mm-200mm f/2.8 IS, 1.4II Ext, 580 EXII Speedlite

my choices would be:

1dmkIIn
1dmkIII (if it has the fix done)
7d
50d

In that order. you cant beat the 1d series for sports.

Okay! Why the 1D MKIIn over the 50D for sports. It is to my knowledge the 50D has a higher mega pixel count, newer sensor & processor, and a few more bells and whistles. I trust your judgment and will look into this order. Also, how do they compare in pricing. From what I remember, the 50D should be the cheapest for the buck. So, I'm asking myself how can I justify money for the feature of each.

Your point?

Who gives a rat about MP, and bells and whistles. MP are only good for blowing up images to extreme sizes. The 1dmkIIn will out perform the 50d 95% of the time.

"Bang for the buck" is known for the 1dmkII or the 1dmkIIn right now. You cant get a better deal.

you could get a mkIII for right at 2000. So for 200 dollars more, he could have a 1d and still have the high quality.

Yes, speed wise the 7D is right up there and has a better autofocus than most. I LOVE MY 7D!

Canonnoob,

I appreciate your words or wisdom and you made some great points. The high MP is important to me because I do lots of poster size images and want to have something with 10 MP minimum. This is one of my primary feature that I must have. This is why it's so hard for me to decide. Truthfully, I had my mind set on the 50D until the 7D came out recently. At the same time, I'm familiar with the 1D MKIIn and its menu functions. The speed and durability of the 1D MKIIn is unmatched, but it lacks the MP count from the 50D and 7D. Also, I'm interested in having a DSLR that does video clips, so I'm also thinking about the 7D, too. Right now, I'm not sure which camera to purchase if they were selling for the same price. This is my challenge. Other things I'm looking for before I make my final decision is:

1. ISO performance in low light condition.
2. AF system to track fast moving objects.
3. Shutter life span.
4. New DG IV processor

It's like being in love with 4 women at the same time. Hard decision to make.

well it sounds like you have your mind made up. The only one that does everything you want is the 7d... or the 1dmkIV. so if you want video, and all that jazz then the 7d or the mkIV...

1. ISO performance in low light condition.
2. AF system to track fast moving objects.
3. Shutter life span.

Those first three seem to fit my MK3 to a tee! :-)
