I just started a photography course and I have my first photo assignment which is called 'Work the Subject'. I had to choose a single subject and play with angles and lighting.

What do you think? I need to pick the 2 best pictures.
As you can probably tell, I am very new to Photography.

you have some very nice shots here. what did you use for lights and what type of modifiers did you use. did you use a meter for your lighting and camera settings?

Technically great despite your humility.

As for the purpose of the assignment, you have not worked with the angle assuming you are to pick two from the pool of 9 posted here.

Imagine taking a picture of a cylinder. You can keep taking pictures from the side and basically you'll end up with pictures of predominantly rectangular object. Now, stand on top of a stool or even a table and look straight down on the cylinder...

Likewise, how about a top view of the subject matter here? Play with the lighting and see which lighting angle would effectively reveal the layered petals. Also, try backlighting (with a small light source - LED on a keychain, e.g.) to change the materiality of the petal - you'd be surprised how much light can be transmitted through a single layer of petal.

If it's in focus, it's pornography, if it's out of focus, it's art.

Thank you all very much for your replies.

My lighting was just 2 desk lamps, one larger/brighter than the other. No, I didn't use a meter for the lighting and camera settings.

Mu Eugene- I see what your saying and didn't even realize it until I read your reply.

I just took more photos and tried keeping what you said in mind.
These focus more on the top view.

I love nr. 10, 13 and 15. Which lens did you use?

1st place to 17 and 2nd to 18; due better cropping & oof of the damaged leaf tip. Add a little more color and it will pop! Delete the rest. :)
