The lens is on the way, and a Hoya clear filter, but I need a hood.
Online I'm seeing plastic for wide lens, plastic petal, rubber folding, and more.
I shoot outdoors a lot, often with the backpack on my bike, some in the woods. Whats the purpose of a 'folding rubber' style hood?
Need advice on what I need.
Thanks

The rubber hoods only serve to cut stray light, but they serve no practical purpose if you wish for the hood to be a protective item. Get a plastic petal hood for that. The Canon one is designed well.

I'd either get the Canon hood that is designed for that lens (EW-83J) or the equivalent Ebay knockoff.

get the canon one, or get the canon replica. it's almost the same except it doesn't have the felt on the inside....

Although somewhat expensive, I went with the designated Canon lens hood for my Canon 17-55 lens. There are other alternate brands available too.

If your crafty, you can buy some very fine felt and apply it yourself and cut the edges carefully with an exact-o-knife! (for the ebay knockoff!)

Ditto. Exactly the same except for the felt, its more like a flat black paint.

Will the petal style be no interference when the lens is wide open?

That's the whole point of getting the correct hood for that specific lens. It was designed by Canon to offer the most protection possible without causing any interference. Don't waste any money on some generic POS.

I got the Canon one also. I've read mixed reviews about the Canon knock offs on ebay. Some say they're fine, some say they fit a little loose. After spending that kind of money on the lens I just decided I wanted the real thing and I found one (EW-83J) slightly used for $25 on ebay. It's perfect.

I know I've posted this before, but I own both a knockoff EW83J hood and the OEM Canon one. There is definitely a difference in the quality of the fit and the amount of reflected light on the inside of the hood. How much impact that has on your actual shots is up in the air, however.

I bought THIS (external link) one for $8 shipped. Came in 2 days from NY to FL. Nice tight fit and finish.

the ones that are sold by POTN shop are nice
I'd stay away from the adorama brand (I buy lots of their stuff dough ) ,but the fit and finish was not good imo.
I had the POTN version for my 18-200IS and was nice.
If you can pull the Canon, i think you would be pleased

I just got a generic ebay knockoff - I figured as long as it looks like Canon's it'll do the job decent enough :)

What are the odds that the Canon 24-105 4L's hood (which I own) will offer sufficient protection for the 17-55? It's about 2.5cm (1") shorter than the 17-55's hood so clearly it offers less protection, but I would image much better than no protection...
