So how come you don't just plug up the gap with silicone like you recommend for Canon to do?

Only if they know about it. Note - no serial numbers. :)

Yeah. Only your name on every single photo. How often do you plan on gutting it so you can clean it?

Personally, I'd just send it to Canon and let them deal with it. Or, if the "design flaw" as you call it lets in SOOOOO much dust that it's unusable, I'd return the camera for a refund.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

WOW .. that takes some serious balls of steel to take a 1D4 apart.

Thanks for the picture of the guts of the camera and credit to you mate ... very interesting post, but I'll still be sending mine back to Canon should it need a deep clean.

Hat's off to you! Does the 1D3 have the same design flaw?

PM01 wrote in post #9765351 (external link)
The guts of the Mark IV. Due to a design flaw, cameras with moderate to heavy usage will often get the "unremovable dust" bunnies in the camera with standard cleaning techniques. This is caused by an opening that leads into the area between the pentaprism and the condenser lens assembly.

Only way to clean it all out is to disassemble the camera and to remove the prism. Then you have to open up the lower pentaprism display LCD (displays shutter and f/stop) to get at the area. Filtered air has to be sprayed in between the two optical surfaces to be cleaned.

There is no other way to clean this area other than what I mentioned. If there was an easier access path to this area I would have already found it.

The EOS 1 series has a condenser lens next to the pentaprism. Other series of cameras will more than likely not have a condenser lens such as the 30d, 40d, etc. They don't need a 100% viewfinder with all of the optical tricks.

Enjoy the operating pics.

This is seriously badass.. But don't you think you just exposed every part of the camera to even more dust?
