I'm about to come into a small wedge of cash, around £3000, and I can't make my mind up about what gear to get.

I have a 7D and a 40D already, and I'm tempted to add a 5D Mkll + lens(s). None of my existing lenses are particularly fast and the only L series lenses I have are the 70-200mm f4 and a 400mm f5.6.

If you were in my position - what would you do?

Agree sell the 40D and get a 5D mark 2 and the 24-70 2.8. If you haven't already getting some flash triggers.

I say keep the 7D, sell the 40D, 10-22 and 18-85, then buy a bunch of nice L glass.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

As said above, sell your 40D and get the 5D Mark II to go with your 7D.

I purchased my 5D Mark II 2 weeks ago and can safely say you won't be disappointed in the swap:lol:

I would say you have a great set-up already and to invest it, but interest rates are so poor it's a waste of time. So perhaps what others have said, sell the 40D and go for the 5D2 and perhaps a 24-70L. Maybe a 24-105L kit, because you will probably need a general walkabout lens.

Agreed - better to invest it in decent kit than any kind of financial scheme at the moment. I'll definately get a better return.

I agree with this poster.....the 5D Mark II is an excellent purchase especially now that they have updated the firmware with better support for video. The 24-70 and the 35L are both awesome lens....especially for the 5D Mark II. Those lens shine on full frame cameras. They are also superb on the 7D. I have had two 24-70L lens and sold them both and got the 24-105L. And each time I think to myself "why did i sell that lens" Its one of the best zooms Canon makes. The 35L is fantastic......you can shoot in a dark room at 12800ISO and get photos you can print at 5 X 7"s.

The more I look at the 100mm f2.8 IS Macro...the more I am tempted.

So current thinking is: 5D2 + 24-70 + 100 macro.

Anyone disagree?

Finally decided.

Borrowing an additional couple of grand, I'm going to buy a 1D Mk4 !

After much pontificating (great word eh?), I have decided that the 5D2 is not for me, too slow at 3fps.

1D Mk4... (hairs on the back of neck job)

OK Kevin

I see you've decided. I'd be tempted to get the 1D4 as well. Good choice along with the 24-70.

Looking at your gear list you have two systems which are not compatible. I would sell the 7D, 40D 17-85 ad 10-22. That would leave you with the 400L,70-200L and 50/1.4 along with your incoming 1D4 and 24-70. You can now easily afford a 5D2 which incidentally shoots at 3.9fps and perhaps a 17-40L so you'll have a UWA to complement your collection if you like a wider option. The speed isn't the thing on the 5D2. It's the stellar IQ and the low light capabilities. Your 24-70 will also be a true 24-70 since as you know on a 1D4 it's more like a 31-91. In buying a 5D2 you will be expanding your options and be able to swap lenses between both cameras. If FF is not your ballgame then get more glass or a 1D3. I wouldn't borrow just to buy gear unless you were doing it as a business.

My 2c

Enjoy your photography
