So Im looking at the Cannon 5D mark ii, and they go for about 2500 new and about 2200 used. I happen to work at Best Buy and can get the 5D for close to used one price or even better price then most used if I get it through Cannon - Best Buy employee accommodations. Only problem I see is that if I get it through accommodations I cant add the accidental coverage on it. So Im trying to figure out how good Canons repair policy is and what they cover.

New regular price is 2500
Used 2100-2300
New with best buy discount about the same as used.
New with accommodations from Canon Cheaper then all (but cant get Best buy accidental coverage)

What should I do? Thanks for your help

You can get a personal articles policy through your insurance company. About $1/$1000 covered per month. This will cover all your gear from accident, theft, etc...

Waffles,

In your work you surely know these insurances are just a clever scam to make more money from the customer? They are ALWAYS priced to allow the provider to make a profit.

Once in a hundred years something might go wrong and the policy might pay out if the small print has forgotten to exclude the particular circumstances, but thats a very rare event. I have never paid extra for these things in my life and I reckon I'm comfortably in pocket.

Canon are slow but fair in my experience. The cameras are generally very reliable although there are always rare exceptions.

I shudder at the amount of extended warantee costs I would have paid out over the years, and lost that money. I never buy extended anything but I do have all perils, no deductible, insurance on my camera gear.

No extended warrantee here, but I do have worldwide accidental damage + theft insurance, deductible of 200, and they pay out replacement cost, not market value.

no need to buy extended warranty since most people upgrade to newer bodies every 1-2 years anyways. Look at the 20d, it's like 5 years old and most people don't have them anymore. Even the 30d is kinda of old in today's standards. So whatever is current today, like the 7D will be old and busted like in 3-4 years.

I ended up going with state farm for insurance, no need for the Black Tie warranty.

And they'll actually pay out in a timely fashion if you do experience a loss. They can and will drop you if you have multiple claims in a given period, though, but that shouldn't be a concern for most people.

*I*, when faced with the same decision last year, went new. Why? Preference. I wanted the Canon warranty. Glad I did, like a moron, I let a speck of dust bother me that was sitting on the pentaprism. I tried cleaning it myself and destroyed the focusing plate and focusing screen. I sent it to Canon, assuming it would not be covered, I sent the $100 voucher sent to me to cover the repairs. Canon, taking in consideration that I am a CPS member, repaired it for free, only cost to me was a Grid focus screen, b/c Canon would have replaced it with the stock one. So I bought one and sent it along with the camera. It was repaired and sent to me and the entire ordeal lasted all of 3 days. That would be worth the $300 for me. But that's me.

Best Buy emailed out 12% RewardZone coupons today (at least I got one) so just buy the new camera as a consumer for $2200 and add the coverage if you want it.

That's the coupon I used last month to get my 5D Mark II. Hope to get another coupon soon!
