First Post -- Sunrise/Sunset

Hi all,

Here are some pix I took in Georgian Bay during the long weekend in Canada. Critiques welcome.

Nice - I like the 2nd and the last. My preference is for saturated images with something interesting in the foreground. You got good exposures, well done

Thanks Personally, I like the 3rd one too. One of the duck was actually marvelling the sunrise.

I like the last two the best.

The last one has nice colors, and the leading line of the shore is very good. But it looks a little crooked, like the horizon isn't quite horizontal.

In the second-to-last picture, I like the duck, but I'm not so sure about the other foreground elements. I can't tell what they are, and somehow the big, black outlines are a bit distracting. If it was a smoother shoreline, like the last one, I think that would be better. Also, if he sun wasn't right in the middle I think it would feel a bit better. If you were a few steps to your right as you took it, zoom in a bit and maybe the sun could have been about 1/3 in from the right of the image, an the duck about 1/3 in from the left. That might feel more balanced.

It's a good scene. Worth a few pictures, for sure.

That funky glow and the dip on the horizon where the sun is must be a digital camera thing. Haven't taken too many sunrise / sunset shots with my 300D yet, and those that I did take didn't have such nice smooth skylines.

The last sunrise shot is my fav... and the sunset pic would be fine, but the pile of rocks on the left must be too heavy for the image, because it is pulling it down a bit.

Good start. It would look more dynamic if the pic interest were not so centered. Maybe ducks 1/3 in from the left with the sun 1/3 in from the right.

Not sure I like it. Here's a crop of more or less what some of you suggested. I think it's because the sun has so much impact that nothing can really counter balance it properly. The rock on the bottom right also plays a factor, I guess. But even if you put a hand on the rock, the pic still doesn't look right, IMO.
