I shoot with 2 30Ds that produce great shots. I cannot afford to upgrade completely to 50D or the 7D yet but I know I need to keep equipment more current. I mainly shoot events and weddings. An upgrade would cost be about $150 with current prices of both cameras used. (selling 30D to fund 40D). So my question is, is it worth it this late in the game? I am seeing some pretty good deals on the 40D's since the 7D was released so was interested in moving on one.

Just wondering if the features are worth it. Read most of the reviews but wanted real world opinions.

Thanks

Yes - the 40D was a major upgrade from the 30D. Better high ISO performance, self cleaning sensor, highlite tone priority, 14 bit processing, live view, and many other improvements. Plus your battery and charger are interchangeable between the 30D/40D. You can get refurbs directly from Canon or from Adorama. Adorama has the better deals but you have to keep checking in with them as the stock is iffy.

Better AF too, I think the 40D introduced 9 cross point AF sensors. Great camera.

I wouldn't. Not because its not a better camera, but because you're going to get it then wish you would have just gotten a 50d or 7d.

I wish I could just get the 5D2 but cost is preventing that. My reasoning for the jump to the 40D is just to get the newer features and better ISO performance. Use it for 6-8 months and upgrade once the 7D2 comes out. I am afraid that if I just keep the 30D for another 6-8 months it wont be worth anything at all then.

I would'nt do it. I use a 30D and have avoided the regular switching, I did consider the 50D very briefly, but was only offered £100 part exchange on the 30D which I did not think was a good enough price.

In my opinion, the 40d is one of the best deals on the used market right now. At 5-600 for a good body, the camera is a bargain.

There are significant upgrades from the 30-40d, IMO. Moreso than the 20-30 or the 40-50. I think the move is solid. However, kept in good condition, the 30d should plateau at no less than $300-325.

Well..do you buy your cameras for re sale value or to last you?

The ISO jump from the 30d to the 40d is absolutely nothing to pay 250$ more for. Honestly, its not that much better.

The 30D -> 40D upgrade was much bigger than the 20D -> 30D upgrade. Key improvements were:

Higher resolution
14 bit
Digic III
Sensor shake to remove dust
Interchangeable focus screens
Live view
sRAW
Improved viewfinder
Larger rear LCD

I agree with Jeremy that it's one of the best values out there. But so are the 20D and 30D if you can get one with low mileage.

Resale is part of it. Keeping up with technology is another part of it as well. Industry is ever evolving and need to keep up with it or at least close behind. Good to know on the ISO difference.

Still havent decided yet... Its about a $150 difference, not $250. I have a line on 2 40Ds local for $550. 30Ds selling local regularly for $400 as well.If it were $250, I wouldnt be considering it.

If you have your eye on the 7D line and need the features I'd just buy one now if it's affordable. The 7D MKII probably won't be coming out for 2 more years.

On the other hand unless you wear it out your 30D or a 40D will still be taking quality images 10 years from now so there's nothing wrong with sticking with either of those models either.

The average range for 40ds on this sit is about 650$, if you can find a better deal then go for it. I just don't think the jump is significant enough to spend the extra money, Id just save the money for whatever you really want, since like you said you'll be getting it anyways.

I'm going to jump on the side of "not quite a big enough leap to justify it".

I've borrowed/begged/(almost)stolen two 40Ds, a 50D, a 5D,a 5DMkII, and played with three 7Ds up to now, and don't think that from my 30D to a 40D could be a wise move.

I'm about to get a 7D because the feature set is massively more comprehensive than a 40D. The 5DII, to me, fell short in a couple of key areas, so I'll wait for a (pre)legendary 3D to appear, or maybe a 5DMkIII as-and-when before adding a FF....

Furthermore, right now, I think I'm pretty good with my 30D - I suspect you are even more so! Therefore, when I learn a new body, I want to have to really learn a new body!

So, 30D to 40D....?

Nahhhh.
