I've been asked at the last minute to shoot the Gatornationals. At first I turned them down since I'm going to Sebring Wednesday, but never have never shot a drag race. Now I'm rethinking.

What different levels of access in are there for credentialed photographers? I don't want to accept this if there is no pit or start access, but I don't have a clue how NHRA regulates photographers. I'm familiar with NASCAR and sports car racing only.

Can anyone help me out? I have to call them back today.

Most credentialed drag race photographers place themselves at the start line.

It's a far louder, hotter and more intense location than anyplace else in motorsports. It's not for everyone.

No one is allowed trackside at the "top end" of the strip at the finish line, where the cars run their fastest. A few will place themselves as close as they can get for speed shots.

A few photographers wait at the shutdown area where drivers get out of their cars. Between pro rounds, photographers go to the pits to get images of cars being serviced, but the pits are open to anyone.

So, most likely, you'll want to get on the start line, but you'd better prepare with the strongest ear protection you can find, and be ready for the blast of heat, fumes and rubber from the nitro cars.

If you have credentials, you can be anywhere in the pits, start line, and up to about the 200 foot mark (track specific).

Top end shots are done from the turn off area (translate: long glass)

I find that I use the 24-70 the most on the start line, unless I go down to about the 80 ft mark...then its the 70-200....and if i go down to about 200 ft...its a toss up between the 3 or 400 2.8.

If I'm working the burn out area, the 17-40 does well if your wanting a slight distorted view...but still use the 24-70 the most there.

At the Gater's....you'll find that the 70-200 will be the most common start line shot....due to access area being set back more.

Having a small step ladder will be a great accessory..as well as multiple bodies. Shoot the 70-200 for launch...switch to longer lens as you track going down for "problem" shots

The 70-200 will allow for getting great candid's as you walk around prep staging areas.

Most drag strips give access to anywhere on the grounds for most people with press passes. I have never been told I could not go somewhere. I have been told other dumb things but not that..lol
