For a beginner I would go with one that supports E-TTL which both the YN-465 and the Canon 430 support.

If you get the YN or Canon then depends on your budget as much as anything.

I started with a simple Sunpak flash. Learned to use it and found its limitations so I knew what I wanted when I upgraded.

My recommendation would be just a YN-465 for now so you can learn to use the single flash and then get the YN-460 at a later stage for a second OCF flash.

i have the yn-465 and a few yn460 IIs on the way. They are a great little simple flash. very very easy to use. I have personally only used the 430EX II a couple of times when I borrowed off friends but for a beginner on a budget, Yongnuo hands down. I would recommend you purchase some sort of eBay warranty off Squaretrade or Buyshield. Even when you learn more about lighting, it gets even crazier when off camera comes into play. I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. You should check out the flickr group for Yongnuo users.

I have 2 Yn460's and a 430 EXII the Yn460's are surprisingly good flashes for the $

I use my Canon 430 on camera but when I setup multiple flashes I put the Yn460's on the stands. I am going to buy my daughter the Yn465 since it will be on her camera and then she will have ETTL
