I have an internal card reader, plugged into a USB header on my motherboard (Asus P5Q SE/R, an ICH10 board). When I turn the computer on it says something like "This device could perform faster - a high speed device is plugged into a low speed port". Clicking the message brings up the device manager showing ICH10.

The board definitely has the high speed USB 2.0. I figure there's a driver or setting that needs changing or updating, but I can't work it out - not sure and the intel site is a maze. The Asus site support for that board hasn't been updated in a year or more.

Does anyone know how to get my internal card reader running at full speed?

It's a very common problem, with no sure answer. Some people recommend removing the device, then going to the Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > then deleting the "USB Mass Storage Device" entries as well as the "USB Composite Device" entries. Then, the next time you plug in your device the drivers will reload and things 'might' work as USB 2 again. Some people say to delete these entries, then download the newest Chipset drivers for your motherboard, install them, then reboot.

You can also check in the BIOS and turn off "Legacy USB Support" - but some boards will auto sense USB 1 and activate support automatically. Also, if you have a USB keyboard and you turn off Legacy support then you will not be able to use it until Windows fully loads (wont be able to use it for Boot Loaders for instance). If the device is an iPod then you can do all the above plus reinstall Bonjour and the iTune's Helper.

The root of the problem is typically on the motherboard not being auto sensed by Windows drivers.

I tried that and I get 262MB copied in 40 seconds - 52Mbps or 6MBps - from a Sandisk E3 card. My external Sandisk USB reader gets 19MBps or 150Mbps. Maybe my internal reader is just slow.

Thanks for the help :)

I had trouble hooking up two different "internal" readers to the mobo headers on my i7 rig. They would work for a short time, then just either stop working or revert back to slower speeds. The last reader I bought can be used internally or externally so I finally just ran the USB cable and plugged it in to a port on the back of the case. It has been perfect ever since.
